Chip Kaufmann: Film Historian / Movie Reviewer
I was born in 1952 in Greenville, South Carolina and attended the University of South Carolina from 1970-1972. It was there that I first encountered and began to study film criticism and film preservation. I later obtained a degree in Theatre Arts from Furman University in 1975.
I started reviewing movies in 1979 for a public radio station in Charleston, SC. After moving to Asheville, NC in 1983, I wound up as a classical music announcer with the local NPR affiliate from which I retired in 2019 after 36 years. I also recently retired from the Southeastern Film Critics Association (SEFCA).
I taught film classes for the OLLI program at UNC Asheville from 2008-2019 and at USC Beaufort from 2019-2020. I also lectured on composers for the Asheville Symphony. I first began contributing reviews to Amazon in 2001. The vast majority of my reviews concern either silent movies or B movie horror/sci-fi films.
